Mutter paneer / Matar paneer

Mutter paneer is a popular North Indian vegetarian recipe. The blend of peas and paneer in tomato and onion curry provides the dish a glorious flavour. The dish goes well with chapathi /roti.
Mutter paneer

  • Paneer - 1 cup (cubed)
  • Green peas - 1/2 cup 
  • Oil
  • Mustard seeds (for seasoning)
  • Curry leaves - 2 or 3 leaves
  • Red chilli powder - 1/2 tbsp
  • Coriander powder -  1/2 tbsp
  • Salt to taste
To grind:
  • Onions - 1 (roughly chopped)
  • Green chilli -1
  • Garlic - 2 cloves
  • Ginger - 1/2 inch piece
Grind onion, green chilli, garlic and ginger together to form a paste.

To grind: 
  • Tomatoes - 2 (roughly chopped)
Grind tomatoes to form a smooth puree.


  1. Cook green peas in water by adding a little salt and set aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves.
  3. Add the onion paste (paste containing onion,  green chilli, garlic and ginger) and saute well.
  4. Allow to cook well with frequent stirring until the oil separates and raw smell goes off.
  5. Now add the tomato puree and saute well until the tomatoes are cooked and oil separates..
  6. Add red chilli powder, coriander powder, salt and mix well.
  7. Add the cooked green peas and saute.
  8. Add 1/2 cup water and mix well and allow the gravy to boil for 2 minutes.
  9. Add paneer cubes and mix well, allow to boil for a minute and turn off the flame.
  10. Serve hot with chapathi / Roti.
