Keerai Masiyal / South Indian Style Mashed Spinach

Keerai Masiyal is a south Indian style mashed spinach with dhal recipe. It is a easy to cook recipe and very healthy too. The blend of dhal and spinach gives a great taste.

Keerai Masiyal

  • Spinach (or any other greens) - 3 cups
  • Toor Dhal - 1/4 cup
  • Garlic - 5 cloves (chop 1 clove for tempering)
  • Green chillies - 2
  • Tomato - 1 (finely chopped)
  • Red chilli - 1
  • Mustard seeds - 1/4 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - 3 or 4 leaves
  • Onion - 1/4 (finely chopped)
  • Oil
  • Salt to taste

  1. Pressure cook toor dhal and set aside.
  2. Take a pan containing 1 cup water. Add spinach, 4 garlic cloves, green chilli, tomato into the water and bring to a boil.
  3. Once the spinach and tomatoes are soft and tender, turn off heat.
  4. Allow to cool and mash it with a blender.
  5. Mix the dhal and spinach puree together. 
  6. In a pan, heat 1 tbsp of oil, add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add curry leaves, red chilli and saute.
  7. Now add onions and chopped garlic clove and saute till the onions become translucent.
  8. Add the spinach and dhal mixture to it and stir well by adding salt.
  9. Turn off heat and serve hot with rice.
