Arisi Paruppu Sadam / Dhal rice


Arisi Paruppu Sadam is a popular dish in Coimbatore. It is a easy and nutritious one pot meal. It requires very few ingredients to prepare and it tastes delicious.

Arisi Paruppu Sadam

  Ingredients:
  • Rice - 1 cup
  • Toor Dhal - 1/2 cup
  • Pearl Onion / Shallots - 8 (diced)
  • Tomato - 2 (finely chopped)
  • Garlic - 4 cloves
  • Turmeric powder - 1/4 tbsp
  • Coriander leaves 
  • Green chillies - 3 (diced)
  • Mustard seeds - (for seasoning)
  • Cumin seeds (Jeera) - 1 tbsp
  • Ghee - 3 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - 4 or 5 leaves
  • Oil
  • Salt - to taste
 

Method:
  1. Wash and soak rice and dhal in water for half and hour using 1 cup rice : 3 cup water ratio.
  2. Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds splutter, add cumin seeds and curry leaves.
  3. Now add onions , garlic, green chillies and saute till the onions become translucent.
  4. Add turmeric powder and saute well.
  5. Add tomatoes and saute well until the tomatoes are soft.
  6. Add the soaked rice and dhal (along with water) and stir well. 
  7. Add required amount of salt and sprinkle coriander leaves and stir.
  8. Pressure cook the rice.
  9. Remove pan from heat, add ghee and mix well.
  10. Serve hot with appalam/pappad.
