Meen Moilee / Fish Moilee

Meen Moilee (Fish Moilee) is a kerala style fish curry. It is made with mild spices and coconut milk. It is a fantastic fish gravy for steamed rice. This is a simple and easy dish to make and the coconut milk enhances the taste of the dish.
Meen Moilee

  • Onion - 1 big (sliced)
  • Tomato - 1 (chopped)
  • Fish
  • Ginger - 1 inch piece (crushed)
  • Garlic - 4 or 5 cloves(crushed)
  • Pepper powder - 2 tbsp
  • Lemon juice - 1 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder- 1 tbsp
  • Coconut milk - 1 cup
  • Green chillies - 3 (diced)
  • Mustard seeds ( for seasoning)
  • Fenugreek / Vendhayam - 1/4 tbsp
  • Curry leaves - 5 or 6 leaves
  • Coriander powder - 1 tbsp
  • Coconut oil 
  • Salt to taste
To Marinate:
In a bowl take turmeric powder, salt, 1 tbsp of pepper powder, lemon juice 1 tbsp, 1 tbsp of coconut oil. Mix them well and add the fish pieces to it and allow to marinate for half an hour.

  1. Take 2 tbsp coconut oil in a pan, add the marinated fish, slightly fry the fishes on both sides and remove it from the pan and set aside.
  2. In the same pan, add mustard seeds. Once the mustard seeds crackle, add fenugreek , crushed ginger and garlic and saute for a minute.
  3. Add curry leaves, onions and green chillies and saute well till the onions are translucent.
  4. Now add tomatoes and saute for a minute.
  5. Add coriander powder, 1 tbsp pepper powder and saute.
  6. Now add half cup of coconut milk and stir well.
  7. Add the fish, salt and stir carefully and allow to boil with a closed lid.
  8. Once the gravy boils add the remaining coconut milk and simmer for 3 minutes. (Adjust salt according to taste).
  9. Now the gravy is ready. Turn off heat and serve hot with rice.
